Check out our UPCOMING EVENTS for the 2018-19 school year!  Our community events give participants of all ages the opportunity to come discover the exiting wonders of science, while accommodating a convenient Sunday and weeknight schedule.   


Community Science Carnival 2018!

On Sunday October 7th 2018 from 12:30pm to 3:30pm, we will hold our annual carnival, filled with exciting exhibits, projects, and activities for the whole family.  The science show, our main event, will take place at 2pm in the Yeshurun social hall.  Great Chicago Food and Beverage Co. will be on site with a BBQ lunch menu!  We have expanded to include twice as many activities this year!  There is no cost to attend, and no preregistration is required, just come!

Molecular Biology Course for Women 2018!

Join our condensed 6-session course in advanced molecular biology!  Learn to use the latest research equipment to modify growth, isolate proteins, and study cutting edge gene modification of bacteria.  This is a valuable lab experience for aspiring scientists, physicians, or nurses, often not taught in school!  The sessions will take place from 7-9:15pm on October 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, and 18.  The cost is only $50 for the first offering of this course.  Space is limited.  Please give us a call at 773-649-5355 or send us an email at programs@walderlab.org to sign up.


Father-Son Event 2018!

Fathers and sons are invited to join the Walder Science Center from 7-8:15pm, either on Monday November 5, Thursday November 15, or on Tuesday November 20,  to study the amazing physics behind medieval catapult technology!  Participants will build their own launchers and take them home after the event.  Each dad is invited to bring with them up to two sons in grades 1-6.

Cost: $10 per family.

Mother-Daughter Event 2018!

Mothers and daughters are invited to join the Walder Science Center, either on Wednesday December 12 at 7pmMonday December 17 at 7pm, or Sunday December 23 at 10am, to make havdala (multi-wick) candles and study various properties of light and heat!  Each mom is invited to bring with them up to two daughters in grades 1-6.

Cost: $10 per family.

Mother-Daughter Event 2019!

Mothers and daughters are invited to join the Walder Science Center on Sunday January 6th at 10am,  for our first jigsaw puzzle competition!  Families will race to assemble a 300-piece puzzle on the theme of astronomy.  The first three finishers will be awarded prizes!  Join this unique and exciting family event.  Even if you don’t like the pressure of competition, you are still encouraged to come put together a puzzle with your children at your own pace, with other community mothers and daughters!  Each mom is invited to bring with them any daughters in grades 1-8.

Cost: $15 per family for the puzzle, which will be yours to keep after the contest.

Jerusalem Science Contest Awards Banquet 2019!

On Monday March 4th at 6:30pm, at the Adas Yeshurun social hall 3050 W Touhy Ave,  there will be an evening of presentations by the top 5 winners of our international Jerusalem Science Contest.  The contest theme this year is molecular biology.  Each finalist will make a 5 minute presentation on their cutting-edge research they developed throughout the contest.  Each presentation will include a unique Judaic component as well, showing how their topic relates to Jewish ethics, laws, or philosophy!  There will be a short sushi reception at 6:30pm, followed by presentations from 7-8pm.  Advance registration is not required, and there is no cost to attend.


 

—– COMPLETED EVENTS of the 2017-18 SCHOOL YEAR —–

Mother-Daughter Science Event 2017!  Mothers and daughters are invited to join the Walder Science Center, either on Sunday July 29th at 10am, or on Tuesday July 31st at 7pm, for some exciting experiments on chemical precipitation, including silver plating a flower vase through a chemical reaction with real silver!  Each mom is invited to bring with them up to two daughters in grades 1-6.

Science Carnival:  On Sunday January 7th 2018 from noon to 4pm, we will hold our annual carnival, filled with exciting exhibits, projects, and shows for the whole family.  Save the date.  No preregistration is required!

Solar Eclipse 2017: Stop by the Walder Science Center (3050 W. Touhy Ave.) between 1 and 2pm on Monday August 21st to learn about the Eclipse, to view it safely, and to participate in activities for children and adults.  Email us at programs@walderlab.org for questions.   No preregistration is required.

Mother-Daughter Science Night: Mothers and daughters (grades 1-6) are invited to participate in an evening of science exploration and experimentation Wednesday September 13 from 6:30-7:45pm entitled Deconstructing Challah: the Science of Bread.  The cost to participate is FREE for those who preregister.  It will cost $4 at the door.  To register, please email programs@walderlab.org.  Write Mother-Daughter in the subject line, and include contact email and phone number, and the grade level and school your daughter attends.
